Meet the Musician: Janet Burgan

A voice of joy, rhythm, and resilience at the Narrowsburg Farmers’ Market

If you’ve ever heard the sound of heartfelt folk-blues echoing across the market, chances are it was Janet Burgan behind the mic.

With her warm voice, easy rhythm, and unmistakable spark, Janet brings more than music — she brings a feeling of connection.

A long-time supporter of the market, she’s known not just for her songs, but for her generosity, her neighborly spirit, and her love of leafy greens (especially kale!).

Q&A with Janet Burgan

Tell us a bit about yourself. How did you get into music?

I was born a musician.

When I was very small, I’d climb up on the piano bench and pick out tunes I heard on the radio or from records. Music has always been a part of me.

How would you describe your musical style or influences?

I loved classical music first, then came to love rock and roll and rhythm and blues. I found my way to traditional country much later in life.

I studied piano and trombone at the conservatory, then moved to Boston to study voice.

What do you love most about playing at the Narrowsburg Farmers’ Market?

Meeting my neighbors and the farmers! It feels like home.

Any favorite memories or funny moments from past market days?

Oh yes — many times we’ve all had to run for cover from a thunderstorm! Nature loves to keep things interesting.

What’s your go-to post-market meal or favorite seasonal veggie?

I live on kale!

And I always look forward to the recipes Danielle and Jen create and demo for us — they’re seasonal, soulful, and delicious.

Where else can folks hear your music?

You can find me online at www.janetburgan.com — or listen on Facebook, YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Music.

If your music had a message or feeling it wanted to share, what would it be?

Love each other. No exceptions.

What inspires you these days — in music, life, or community?

I love hiking and kayaking, reading, and staying engaged in progressive politics. Being in nature and being in community both feed my soul.
